Nusa Penida Travel Guide: Snorkelling, Hidden Beaches & The Famous Kelingking Cliff

Nusa Penida is one of Bali’s most stunning islands, known for its dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and crystal-clear waters. I spent two days exploring its breathtaking landscapes and some of the best snorkelling spots. Here’s everything you need to know before visiting!

✈️ Quick Summary

Best Place to Stay: Kabupaten Klungkung– Just a short walk from Kelingking Beach

Must-Try Food: Local seafood at a beachside warung

Top Activity: Snorkelling at Crystal Bay – clear water & lots of marine life!

Would I Go Back? Yes, but I’d stay an extra night to explore more hidden spots!

🏨 Where I Stayed in Nusa Penida

Airbnb: Kabupaten Klungkung

Location: 3-minute walk to Kelingking Beach

Pros: Great views, close to key attractions, restaurant and pool available 24/7

Cons: Limited food options nearby

💡 Tip: If you want to avoid long drives, stay near the attractions you plan to visit!

🍽️ Where I Ate – Best Food Spots in Nusa Penida

1. Local Warungs

Best For: Authentic Indonesian food

Must-Try Dish: Fresh grilled seafood

2. Beachside Cafés

Best For: Light meals & fruit smoothies

Must-Try: French Toast & iced coffee

💡 Food Tip: There aren’t many restaurants on the island, so plan meal stops ahead of time!

🏝️ Things to Do & See in Nusa Penida

1. Snorkelling at Crystal Bay

Cost: ~250,000 IDR (~£13) for a snorkelling tour

Time Needed: 2-3 hours

My Experience: Amazing coral reefs & colourful fish

Tip: Go early to avoid crowds

2. Kelingking Beach (“T-Rex Cliff”)

Cost: 10,000 IDR (~£0.50) entrance fee

Time Needed: 2-3 hours (if hiking down)

My Experience: Jaw-dropping views, but the hike is steep (looks like they’re building a lift now)

Tip: Bring water & wear proper shoes if you hike down

3. Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach

Cost: 15,000 IDR (~£0.80)

Time Needed: 1-2 hours

My Experience: Stunning natural pools, but rough waves

Tip: You can’t swim here. It’s more for the views

💡 Would I Recommend? 100% YES! Nusa Penida is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

💡 Tips & Recommendations – What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Nusa Penida

  • If you can, rent a scooter or hire a driver – The roads are rough, so be prepared!

  • Pack snacks & water – There aren’t many shops outside the main areas.

  • Stay at least 2 nights – A day trip isn’t enough to see everything.

🔄 What I Would Do Differently Next Time

  • I’d avoid rushing from place to place – The island is bigger than it looks!

  • I’d skip some crowded spots and explore more hidden beaches.

  • I’d spend more time to visit Diamond Beach & Thousand Island Viewpoint

  • I’d book a longer snorkelling tour to see Manta Rays!

🌟 Final Thoughts – Is Nusa Penida Worth Visiting?

Yes, but it wasn’t my favourite Nusa Island. Nusa Penida is one of the most breathtaking places in Bali. If you love stunning landscapes and adventure, you’ll love it here. Just be prepared for bumpy roads and lots of stairs!
